CorrDefense: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is CorrDefense?

A. CorrDefense is a state-of-the-art corrosion prevention and control (CPC) information management and distribution e-portal sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition Technology and Logistics (OUSD(AT&L)), Office of Corrosion Policy and Oversight. The Web site has been designated as one of the cornerstones in the DoD's long-term strategy for corrosion prevention and mitigation detailed in 10 U.S.C. 2228, which was enacted by the Bob Stump National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2003. CorrDefense is a free service for all individuals and organizations from academia, government, and industry who have an interest in corrosion, particularly as it relates to DoD weapon systems, equipment, related commercial assets, and infrastructure.

CorrDefense comprises corrosion professionals from throughout the corrosion prevention community and is the home of the Corrosion Prevention and Control Integrated Product Team (CPCIPT). The CPCIPT provides strategic direction to reduce the overall impact of corrosion on DoD assets. CorrDefense provides individual areas for each of the Working Integrated Product Teams (WIPTs), as well as other Working Groups (WGs), for sharing of documents, announcements, and expertise on that group’s topics. Each member of CorrDefense brings valuable resources to the virtual on-line community to help achieve the goals of the CorrDefense community of practice.

Note: The CorrDefense site is an UNCLASSIFIED system.

Q. How may I become a member of CorrDefense?

A. Membership is automatically granted to users with a valid .mil or .gov e-mail address. Furthermore, any person (member or non-member) with a valid .mil or .gov e-mail address is allowed to sponsor a new user for membership on CorrDefense.org. CorrDefense will notify the sponsor, via email, that their sponsorship has been requested and will provide a URL in the email that the sponsor can click on to approve or decline sponsorship of the new member. CorrDefense will send an initial e-mail reminder to the sponsor after five business days and will send a second e-mail reminder to the sponsor after 15 business days, if they have not approved or declined the member. A sponsorship will expire after 30 days. Once a sponsorship has expired, the user seeking membership shall receive an e-mail notifying them of this fact, and explaining that they will need to request a new sponsor.

Q. What is the process for uploading documents or other content to CorrDefense?

A. Members may upload UNCLASSIFIED (approved for public release) content to the Web site. Do not contribute any document that has not been officially approved for public release (i.e., Classified, Sensitive But Unclassified (SBU), NOFORN (Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals), For Official Use Only (FOUO)), business sensitive, copyrighted (without the permission of the owner), proprietary information, and/or unlicensed or restricted software, to the general membership side of the Web site. The content submitter must affirm that content submitted has been officially approved for public release.

Content submitters must use the Upload Content feature and complete the Upload Content form in its entirety. Once the form is submitted, important meta-data are captured and stored with the document.

Q. Does the U.S. or CorrDefense endorse any companies, products, services, or external links listed on CorrDefense?

A. No. The commercial products or services listed on CorrDefense by trade name, trademark, or manufacturer do not constitute or imply an endorsement by either the U.S. Government or CorrDefense. Neither CorrDefense nor the U.S. Government has any authority or responsibility in the maintenance of the servers that are outside the CorrDefense domain. Links are provided for information purposes only and should not be construed as an endorsement or agreement by or with the Department of Defense.

Q. Who is responsible for getting authorization from the author or copyright holder when posting a document or other content to CorrDefense?

A. This responsibility rests with the content submitter.

Q. Are there file size limitations when submitting content to CorrDefense or uploading content to a WIPT/Working Group?

A. There are no file size limitations when submitting content to CorrDefense or uploading content to a WIPT/WG. Content submitted to CorrDefense using the Upload Content feature is transmitted via e-mail to the appropriate community leader, content editor, and/or SME and is subject to a review process that may take up to 75 days. The speed at which content is uploaded directly to a WIPT/WG depends on the member’s system and connection speed.

Q. Can a video clip be posted on CorrDefense?

A. Yes. There are no file type limitations on the Image Library, although CorrDefense does not currently support streaming video and audio. However, members may download a video clip to their local machine for viewing, depending upon their hardware and software configuration.

Q. Can I add my company or organization URL to the CorrDefense Web site?

A. No. This function is no longer deemed necessary given the Product Introduction features that have been incorporated into the CorrDefense Web site.

Q. Can I post a document or other content to a WIPT or Working Group that has not been approved for public release?

A. Yes. WIPTs and WGs are intended to be extremely flexible—yet secure—collaborative work environments. They are considered private workspaces where WIPT or WG members can exchange ideas and documents. Documents or other content not approved for public release—but not classified in any way—can be posted to a WIPT or WG as long as they remain within the WIPT or WG. Documents moved from a WIPT or WG to the general membership side must be cleared for public release and must be submitted via the Upload Content feature on the Web site.

Q. How is content approved for posting on CorrDefense?

A. Uploaded content—designated for locations other than WIPTs and WGs—is routed to the appropriate community leader, content editor, and/or subject matter expert, based on the category chosen, for approval for posting on the Web site. The status of a submitted document or other file is designated as "Pending" until the reviewer has reviewed the document, or 75 days have passed, whichever occurs first. Content is posted if the reviewer approves within 75 days and content is rejected if the reviewer disapproves within 75 days. Content is posted—with the caveat that it has not been reviewed—if the reviewer does nothing within 75 days.

Q. How do I log out of the CorrDefense Web site?

A. Closing your browser window will automatically log you out of the Web site.

Q. Should I upgrade my browser?

A. Typically, the latest version of your browser will have the newest features and bug fixes. Upgrading to the latest version is therefore recommended. CorrDefense supports Internet Explorer version 6.0 and above only. Web site content is optimized for 1024x768 screen resolution.

Q. How do I find out my browser version?

A. Click on "Help" and "About Internet Explorer" to learn the version number of your browser.

Q. Will my pop-up blocker affect my ability to use the CorrDefense site?

A. Yes. We recommend that you turn off your COTS pop-up blocker and/or browser pop-up blocker setting. Some features on CorrDefense open additional windows on your personal computer and will not function properly if blocked.

Q. I have forgotten my username/password, or I am unable to login to CorrDefense.

A. CorrDefense allows the user three attempts to login with the correct username and password combination. It will display a warning message to the user when an invalid user name or password is entered. It will disable a username after three invalid password attempts and direct the user to the "forgot password/username" function. Note: Passwords must be, at a minimum, case sensitive, eight characters in length, using a mix of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and special characters, including at least one of each (e.g., emPagd2!). Passwords automatically expire every 90 days. The system requires that at least four characters of the password be changed when a new password is created. The system maintains a queue of previously used passwords. The password queue stores a minimum of eight passwords that are protected against re-use.

Q. Who has access to my member profile information?

A. Web site members have the ability to view a list of other members with three important caveats. First, members with a .mil e-mail address may view information about any other member. Second, members without a .mil e-mail address may not view information about .mil members. Third, members of a WIPT or WG are able to see information about any other member of that WIPT or WG (i.e., without a distinction being made between those with or without a .mil email address). Administrators have access to all information provided by a member at the time of registration, including those fields the member chose to "hide."

Q. Does CorrDefense allow spam?

A. CorrDefense has zero tolerance for Unsolicited Broadcast E-mail and Unsolicited Commercial Email ("UBE/UCE," commonly known as "spam") whether originating from its members or from the members that provide services that are used to support UBE/UCE.

CorrDefense members are responsible for ensuring that they abide by this policy. CorrDefense members will be held responsible for all traffic either sent via their connection to CorrDefense or sent elsewhere using support services provided via their connection to CorrDefense. "Support services" includes hosting Web sites, electronic mailboxes, telephony gateways, IRC servers, and sale of spamming software or other similar services. Members are also responsible for ensuring that they do not advertise or promote themselves through UBE/UCE.

If you believe that you have received spam from or through CorrDefense, please use the Contact Us feature to notify us of the incident. Please provide information that you believe may help us in our investigation. In addition, please save the unsolicited e-mail as a text file and send to us using the Attach File option at the bottom of the Contact Us form. CorrDefense will not take action on anonymous spam complaints.
