- Antenna Gaskets and Floorboard Tapes Lower Price of Aircraft Maintenance
Using a $2 million award from the DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office, the Navy, Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard have begun using Av-DEC gasket technology on various aircraft to prevent antenna and floorboard interface corrosion. This article is the first of a two-part series highlighting how the Services learned about the material and its cost benefits, and began jointly applying it to their equipment.
- Clear Water Rinse System Improves Aircrew Safety and Lowers DoD Costs
Army aircraft, which take a beating from the saltwater and sand in sea and desert environments, are now getting rinsed more often at Wheeler and Hunter Army Airfields. Recognizing the potential benefit and cost savings for all Services, AMCOM (Army Aviation and Missile Command) officials have teamed with Army Materiel Command and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office to test a Clear Water Rinse System that has been designed to rinse the Army’s helicopter fleet.
- Navy Uses Rapid-Cure Coatings to Preserve Amphibious Ship Well-Decks
Maintaining the well-decks of sea-going amphibious assault warships is daunting. To meet the challenge, several branches of the Navy are testing rapid-cure, solvent-free epoxies and polyurethanes on well-deck overheads. These products are expected to extend the life of the coatings and save on application costs.
- Robins Air Force Base Upgrades SCADA System to Remotely Monitor Underground Corrosion
Aided by funding from the Office of the Secretary of Defense Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office, the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency is taking steps to improve the maintenance of all underground piping systems, tanks, and water towers at Warner Robins Air Force Base (AFB) in central Georgia. Robins AFB officials have begun upgrading the base’s remote-controlled SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems, which are currently used to inspect and maintain its power grid, sanitary lift stations, industrial lift stations, and power generators.
